2 Brooklyn intersections listed among most dangerous in NYC
With an alarming raise in cyclist deaths in New York City this year, a site has compiled a list of dangerous intersections with suggestions for improvement.
The New York City Department of Transportation has its own data, but Localize.city says it is not up-to-date, and only shows information related to pedestrians.
A total of five Brooklyn intersections made Localize's list. The corner of Jay and Tillary streets tied for second place with Atlantic and Bedford avenues. According to NYPD data, 20 injuries occurred at Atlantic and Bedford from 2014 through 2018.
The list comes after the city's 18th cyclist death occurred in Sunset Park Monday, already a higher number than all of 2018. The investigation shows a person in a parked car opened their door on 3rd Avenue, and when the bicyclist swerved to avoid it, the person hit a tractor-trailer. They were later pronounced dead.
Last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled the Green Wave plan, which aims to make bicycling more safe in the city. Localize says an earlier update on Vision Zero focused on pedestrian injuries and only went up to 2016. Urban planners have also offered suggestions for how to make the roads safer.
Localize.city believes the city is heading in the right direction, but needs to do more to make roads safer.
