A church honored two fathers Sunday who have dedicated their lives to fighting gang and gun violence.
One dad is a former gang leader turned activist, and the other is the father of a teenager who was killed by gun violence.
Both were honored at the Father's Day brunch at the Bridge Church in East Flatbush.
They were chosen because of their efforts to stop gun violence in their communities.
Shanduke McPhatter is the founder of the group Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes. His brother was recently gunned down during a rap concert back in May and says he was honored to be recognized.
"It's important to us because in the work that we do, we know it's not just our components that matter," he says. "It's different entities, different parts of the community, and the church is a major part of the community."
The Bridge Church says too many young men in the neighborhood continue to carry guns so they wanted to highlight the role models who are helping them choose a different path.
