Officials say they are looking for a driver accused of killing a woman who was crossing the street in Bath Beach.
Police say two people were killed after being hit by cars in two separate incidents while crossing the street just hours apart from one another.
They say the most recent incident occurred on Bay Parkway at 10:00 p.m. yesterday when 61-year-old John Saldiran was crossing the street in front of his home and was hit by an SUV. Officials say he was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the 22-year old-driver stayed at the scene. The driver was later taken into custody and is facing aggravated unlicensed operator charges.
Just a few hours prior, and only a few blocks away near Cropsey Avenue and Bay 35th Street, police say another person was struck and killed by a car around 7:15 p.m. Police say 66-year-old Sofiya Ostrovskaya was crossing in the crosswalk when the driver of a dark-colored sedan went through a red light, hit her and sped off.
Neighbors who live in her building say Ostrovskaya recently became a grandmother, and she was a kind person who will be missed.
Officials say they are reviewing surveillance video at the intersection to help further their investigation.
This year, officials say there have been more than 20 pedestrians fatally struck by vehicles across the city.
