A 2-year-old girl remains in critical condition after falling from a window at a Midwood home Monday morning, according to police.
Police say officers responded to a 911 call for an injured child around 8:02 a.m. at a home on East Second Street.
Investigators say the girl fell from a window at the residence. She was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
As of Tuesday morning, police said there had been no change in the child's condition. The investigation into what led up to the fall remains ongoing.
Neighbors told News 12 they were saddened to learn what happened and are thinking about the family as the child continues to receive treatment.
"I'd be devastated. I can't imagine," one neighbor said. "But I mean accidents happens. Parents should be more aware if they need screens or gates. But again accidents happen so we can't really blame the parents."
The incident comes as city health officials remind families to take extra precautions around open windows during the warmer months.
The city's Health Department says window screens are designed to keep insects out and should not be relied on to prevent children from falling. Officials recommend installing window guards or window stops and say young children should never be left alone in a room with an open window.
Under city law, window guards are required in many apartment buildings where a child age 10 or younger lives. The requirement does not apply to private homes, but the city still recommends installing window guards in those residences as well.
