A total of 15 parking garages across New York City are being ordered to vacate due to safety and building structure violations.

The Department of Buildings’ ongoing enforcement sweeps are revealing a growing number of parking structures across the five boroughs that are not up to DOB standards. This sweep of inspections comes after a lower Manhattan garage collapsed, taking the life of one man.

A single-story garage in Kingsbridge Heights recently received a partial vacate notice, meaning they can still operate but that a certain part of the garage cannot have parked cars in it. A seven-story residential parking structure in Brooklyn was another target of these recent sweeps, and has received a partial vacate notice due to concerns about a possible roof collapse.

All garages that are given partial or full vacate orders from the DOB are required to take immediate action to make necessary repairs and must file a full structural report in order to be fully operational again.

The DOB says they will continue to review other parking structures around the city and that additional action may be taken at other locations.
