The NYPD announced that two men have been arrested in connection to two separate violent attacks that took place on the subway this past weekend, with changes coming in wake of these crimes.

According to police, subway crime is down compared to last year and pre-pandemic levels, but this past weekend was concerning for New Yorkers.

On Sunday, a different man slashed three women on the subway, for what police say was seemingly no reason. The man slashed two women in upper Manhattan on Sunday at around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday before traveling downtown and slashing a third woman.

Kemal Rideout, 28, was arrested in connection to those slashings and has been charged three counts of assault.

On Saturday, a man stabbed 32-year-old Bronx resident Tavon Silver to death at the Union Square Station at around 4 a.m. on the 4 train.
The same officers who arrested that suspect also arrested the man charged in connection to this fatal stabbing, Bronx resident Claud White.

Police say White confessed to detectives, informing them that he and the victim were fighting over drugs. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police say New Yorkers can expect to see more cops on the subways following these tragic incidents.

“We’re upwards of around 1,000 additional cops in the subway system,” said NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper. “It will continue until further notice. Those cops are in uniform, they’re going to be assigned to different areas of the subway system, focusing on trains and platforms.”

Police are reminding riders that crime in the transit system is still on the decline, with transit crimes down 8% in comparison to last year.
