The City Council's Committee of Housing and Buildings voted 8-1 on Thursday on legislation to tackle the lead-based paint crisis in the city.
The legislation would issue hefty violations for peeling lead paint in homes where young children are present.
If lead-based paint is found in any common area in a multiple dwelling where a child under 6 lives, that building will be issued a Class C immediate hazardous violation.
The committee referenced previous data that says the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development issued over 15,000 hazardous violations for lead-based paint in the city in 2022 -- an approximate 6,000-violation increase since 2021.
The legislation is awaiting Mayor Eric Adam's signature.
