A new traffic light pattern is coming to a dangerous intersection in the Village of Mamaroneck where a woman and her 6-year-old son were struck and killed by a mini school bus back in June.

Molly Murphy Donovan and her son Michael were walking to school when they were hit at the corner of New Street and Mamaroneck Avenue. They were using the crosswalk and did have a walk sign, according to officials.

Since that incident, there has been a fierce call from dozens of families in the community for this stretch of road to be safer for pedestrians.

The Village of Mamaroneck has been working on a number of different methods like repainting the crosswalks.

The village and Westchester County have just approved a new traffic light pattern at the intersection where the accident happened. It will require traffic to stop in all directions when pedestrians have the right of way and are using the crosswalks.

"It's celebratory but also bittersweet because it took these tragic losses to mobilize us," says Melanie Fernandez, a mother from Mamaroneck.

On top of the shift in the traffic light patterns, speed limits are also being reduced to 25 mph on Mamaroneck Avenue between the Interstate 95 entrance and Boston Post Road.

Village leaders tell News 12 they are planning for these new safety measures to be complete by the start of the school year on Sept. 3.
