Residents opting to pay at least $100 for car snow removal

Three days after the snowstorm, some residents say they cars are still trapped, buried under snow and ice.

On Day 3 of snow cleanup, rows of cars are still covered in snow, and some of the digging is just getting started.

“My daughter just had a baby two days ago,” said Ilatisha, a mother shoveling a vehicle on Wednesday night. “So, she's unable to get her car, so myself and her husband are here trying to get the car out now. We spent the last two days in the hospital.”

“I've been stuck at home taking trains and Uber's,” said Juan Diego. “I got to play soccer today, so I have to get this car out to be able to get to the field.”

Although Diego says he already shoveled once before, it seems that was not nearly enough.

“It was a lot.” said Diego. “Plus when the truck came, it just kept throwing the snow in the process."

“New York City can do a little better,” said Ilatisha. “Just a little better.”

Residents all over the city have been reaching out online, in person or however else they can ask for help. Each additional day cars are trapped in big piles of snow; it seems the price to get out may go up.

“We start at $100 and then the more ice we go up from there,” said Johnny Yurnet, the owner of Where We Going? Moving Solutions, currently offering snow removal services. “After three or four days of not moving your car like it turns into black ice.”

It's a job he and others who have been digging cars out of the snow since Sunday say requires much more labor.

“I'm picking up boulders of ice,” said Yurnet. “I’m breaking ice, I'm also investing in equipment.”

“A lot of people are not fit to do the shoveling,” said Hedley, owner of H&O Hauling Company. “It’s a very hard job.”

Prices around this time may be steep for a lot of people, but for some desperate enough – they’ll take it.
