Newark police say snow covering an unstable metal grate may have caused a man to fall through when its hinges gave way this morning.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said the incident happened at approximately 8:16 a.m. today. Police and Newark Fire Department crews responded to Christie Street after receiving a call about a man "falling down a metal grate that had an unstable hinge outside a business."

Crews quickly extricated the man and turned him over to EMS. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark and is listed in stable condition, police said. Miranda said snow covering the grate may have created a hazardous situation.

"Snow covering the compromised metal grate may have hindered the victim’s visibility of a potential hazard," Miranda told News 12. "Newark Code Enforcement has been notified along with the building’s management ."

The incident remains under investigation.
