New York lawmakers are calling for tougher safety rules on sightseeing helicopters one year after a deadly Hudson River crash.

Officials gathered in Manhattan on Thursday to urge passage of the Helicopter Safety Parity Act, which they said would impose stricter commercial aviation standards and close what they described as dangerous loopholes in current regulations.

Friday marks one year since a helicopter went down in the Hudson River, killing a family of five and the pilot. Video from that day showed parts of the aircraft breaking apart as it plunged into the water near Jersey City.

The tragedy reignited calls to limit tourist flights over safety concerns, with officials in Hoboken later suing the Federal Aviation Administration over the issue.
