A Suffolk County Community College adjunct professor is facing federal charges, accused of trying to meet up with a 13-year-old for sex.

The U. S. Attorney's Office says 52-year-old Philip Schuler was arraigned in federal court in Central Islip Friday morning on a seven-count indictment, charging him with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and child pornography charges.

Schuler is accused of sending explicit messages to an FBI agent posing as a teenage girl named "Chloe" for months.

As News 12 previously reported, Schuler planned a meeting for Jan. 7 at a park in Valley Stream, where he was arrested. He then told law enforcement he was in love with "Chloe" and wanted to see if she was real. Court documents show the professor gave investigators a motel room key that he rented for the day.

In a statement to News 12 Suffolk County Community College said:

"Upon learning of the adjunct part-time instructor’s arrest and these allegations, he was immediately placed on leave and removed from all duties pending investigation. He is no longer an employee of Suffolk County Community College. The conduct described in the federal indictment is entirely inconsistent with the standards to which all College employees are held."

If convicted, he faces a mandatory 10 years or up to life in prison.
