A water outage reported early Wednesday morning in Dix Hills was the result of a system-wide equipment malfunction, according to the Town of Huntington.

Officials say the malfunction made the water tanks receive false readings on tank quantity.

The issue has since been resolved and water is flowing normally.

"There was a communication sensor that failed between the tanks and the pumps. The last indication that the pumps had were the tanks were full. However, overnight in the morning usage, the tank levels dropped and the pumps didn't receive a signal that the tanks were discharging water. So, they never turned on this morning," says Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth.

Town officials say redundant communications equipment was already being installed to ensure water continues to flow, that is now being expedited.

Water quality was not impacted.

"We're going to go take a look at every one of the sensors system wide to make sure that everything is functioning properly. We have no indications of any other failures," says Smyth.

After the initial reports of the outage, Half Hollow Hills Central School District announced plans to operate under a two-hour delay for remote learning.

“It sputtered because they had to flush all the air out of the lines once it’s off. Then a little bit of rust came out," says resident Greg Finesmith.
