Officials from the Village of Rockville Centre are reminding the public about lithium-ion battery safety after a recent garbage fire.

Authorities say Department of Public Works employees and local firefighters rushed to battle flames caused by an improperly discarded battery.

The fire was extinguished quickly, and no injuries were reported. However, officials urge locals to be cautious, as improper disposal can cause fires in sanitation trucks and waste facilities.

The village posted images of the scene on Facebook as a reminder to never throw lithium-ion batteries away in regular trash or recycling.

Lithium-ion batteries should always be disposed of at a proper drop-off location. For more information, click here.
