Students and staff at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School in Wayne celebrated a fundraising milestone Friday, raising more than $112,000 since 2018 to support women with cancer.
The school's annual Pink Out campaign raised $19,250 this year for Mary's Place by the Sea, an Ocean Grove nonprofit that provides free wellness retreats and services to women with cancer. Total donations since 2018 reached $112,192.
The monthlong campaign culminated Oct. 30 with a schoolwide rally featuring teachers duct-taped to the gym wall, a principal's "pink jail" and opportunities for students to throw pies in the face of health and physical education teacher Samantha Levine, who organizes the event.
Levine's efforts were inspired by her mother, Claire Levine, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, when Samantha was a sixth grader at the school. Claire, who attended the rally, is celebrating 25 years cancer-free.
Four school staff members who survived breast cancer were also recognized during the event.
Fundraising activities throughout October included a flag football tournament and other student-led events.
Eleanor Schoenberger, program director at Mary's Place by the Sea, said $100,000 can help provide free services to more than 200 women with cancer, including oncology massage, counseling, yoga and meditation.
