Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is on track to make history following Democratic gains in the midterm elections.
With Democrats expected to control the U.S. House of Representatives, the congressman from Brooklyn is positioned to become the first Black speaker of the House, a role that is second in the presidential line of succession after the vice president.
Jeffries would assume one of the most powerful positions in Washington if elected by members of the House when the new Congress convenes in January.
The speaker is chosen through a formal vote of House members at the start of a new congressional session.
If elected, Jeffries would become the first New Yorker to serve as House speaker in decades and the first Black lawmaker to hold the position.
