Forty-one percent of the voters who came out Tuesday night for the 45 DistrictCity Council special election voted for Farah Louis, who defeated seven other candidates vying for the seat.

“We didn't think [the vote] would've been as high as it was,” says Louis. “I'm still in shock. I'm in shock because so many people came out to vote.”

Jubilant as the winning celebration was, she says her team is not resting on their laurels.

Once she is sworn in, Louis says she is set on making her mark on education, economic development and above all, housing protection.

"I do believe in strengthening rent regulations,” she says. “We need to give folks an opportunity to stay in their homes.”

Louis also stated that the first piece of legislation she plans to introduce is one that pushes the city to hire urban planners to be present at community boards to ensure that local residents are informed about different developments that are in the works.

Louis tells News 12 that she won't know until next week when she will be sworn in.

Louis will also need to run again in the primary election on June 25.
