A fire tore through a Crown Heights apartment building early Thursday, leaving five people hurt and families shaken.
The flames broke out just after 1:30 a.m. inside a four-story building on Eastern Parkway between Troy and Schenectady avenues, according to the FDNY. Crews say 12 units with about 60 firefighters and EMS workers rushed to the scene. The fire was under control by about 2:15 a.m.
Two civilians were hospitalized in critical condition, while three others sustained minor injuries.
Video from the scene shows firefighters helping tenants get to safety in the middle of the night. The Red Cross also responded, offering support to families forced from their homes.
Anthony, who lives on the fourth floor, said he and his mother had issues trying to get out the building:
“I just seen a lot of smoke. My mom was sleeping and I wake her up and we went to the fire escape and we could not even go down. The fire was too high and it was a lot of smoke—it was crazy.”
Fire marshals are now investigating what sparked the blaze.
