Dancing, delicious food and the colorful outfits. Those are just some of the reasons parade, goers descend upon Eastern Parkway every Labor Day. The females, the vibes, the food 57th annual West Indian American Day. Carnival parade celebrates the Caribbean diaspora. People have been out celebrating all day. It's morning at 6 a.m. We went to Juve and Juve is like the beginning. But when you start and then you go to carnival, the parade began at 11 a.m. but crowds were showing up early to buy some tasty traditional Caribbean stale curry, go jerk chicken. I go home with empty pans all the time. Other vendors were selling some healthier options. So we're all all superfoods. Our booth focus on health and your wealth and um so we have like stuff imported from Jamaica Guinness, sugar cane, fresh coconuts, seeded watermelon, whether you came for the food, dancing or the outfits you most likely left the parade today in high spirits and ready for next year in Crown Heights, Karina Gary, New Brooklyn. Here on News 12 Brooklyn, we have team coverage as the West Indian American day carnival parade takes over the streets of our borough today. I'm Christy Reader. We've got News 12 Carina Gary out there near the route and no avenue in Eastern Parkway. But first up News Julia Joseph, she's at the Brooklyn Museum and that's the end of the parade route. Julia. But that's where all the fun starts. You told me there's food around where you're at now, I'm hungry. Oh, of course. You know, me, always lots of food here. Right? So the carnival doesn't actually kick off till 11. So, until then in front of the Brooklyn Museum, we got to make ourselves busy. So I found Gabby here. She's with her family business, Jamaican cuisine. And this is actually your first carnival, right? Yeah, I'm so excited to be here to see a carnival. And what the nice going on. And you said this is one of your family's busiest days of the year because you're cooking up all this food. So, tell me what we got here. So we have our famous fried chicken wings. Our most loved Oxtail Mac and cheese. And rice and peas and our rice and peas, steamed cabbage and jerk chicken. And you said your favorite earlier is the Oxtail, the way you described it. Tell our viewers, I mean, it's um it's, it's very sweet, savory. The juices just flaws off the meat. It's really good. Sounds amazing. Tiffany described it though. Honestly, a little better sugar spice and everything. Nice, sugar spice and everything nice. This is not your first carnival. So this is my mom's business. We've been doing this for 10 years. So I'm excited to be here as always excited to serve a lot of good food and make people smile. Is there any float you're looking out for today? Um I'm obviously looking out for the Jamaica float. I'm looking out for all the pretty Jamaican girls to come through. You see us beautiful more Jamaican girls on the way. Absolutely. And real quick. These drinks here. Yes. So these are our famous lemonade. So we have Berry lemonade and mango lemonade. I'm actually gonna have you try it. Uh I'm gonna have you proof test it and you got which one's this? This is the Berry lemonade. All right. Cheers. Let's see. Refreshing. Amazing. You don't have one of these but what do you have over there? Yeah, Julia. I'm not gonna lie. I'm a little jealous that you have lemonade right now. But look, I got mac and cheese. I'm definitely a mac and cheese girly. So I'm gonna try this right now. Let's see. Oh, wow. Ok. This is really good. It's worth the $7 that I spent on this. But also Julia, I don't want to brag but I'm told here on no Strain Avenue in Eastern Parkway, this is the spot to be when the parade gets started. I want you guys to take a look. Vendors are lined up preparing for the large crowds that will soon descend here. The vendors that I spoke with say they've been preparing since July for this and one Bushwick woman says she was up all night, not partying, but cooking. And you know what? I am ready for this parade to get started so I can eat some more. I can dance. But for now I'm gonna send it back to you guys in the studio here in Crown Heights, Gary Neutral, Brooklyn. Ok. Well, I'm getting my face painted right here right now. Thanks to White Toto. She does this face painting booth every year at the carnival. How many years has this been for you? I've been doing face painting here for probably about 10 years on the parkway for the Children, for the adults. Flags on your face, on your cheek, on the other cheek, on these cheeks here, wherever you want it. All right. So I'm getting it on my face today and, um, right before this, we tried the Jamaican food. So I figured it's only appropriate to get the Jamaican flag on my face right here. And you said you have one rule for carnival. Something about glitter. Right. Right. That's right. You gotta have glitter if you come to Eastern Parkway and get your face painted and you don't get glitter to jail when you go. Exactly. So I'm gonna finish up this beautiful flag on me right now. I know it's very hard for me while I'm talking and Karina, I don't know what you're doing down there.
