A proud Trinidadian and Brooklyn resident will be this year's grand marshal for the West Indian American Day Parade.

Hazra Ali has lived in the United States for over 30 years, but she says her first few years were difficult. She said she grew nostalgic, until she found a piece of home in Brooklyn.

Ali was selected for the honor because of her tremendous local impact, which was recognized nationally last year.

The U.S Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Ali for her contributions in the Caribbean community, like several events she has led for Borough Hall and Gracie Mansion.

"I discovered there was a parade going on," said Ali. "A lot of Trinidad culture and food around, and I started since then getting involved."

News 12's Daniella Rodriguez sat down with Ali and spoke to her about what Carnival means to her.
