One person was killed after a fire broke out inside a Bed-Stuy apartment building. 

Loved ones say the victim, 61-year-old Steve Dodson, lived on the first floor of the building on Herkimer Street, near Utica Avenue. 

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 3 a.m. after neighbors reported smelling smoke coming from the victim's apartment. All of the other tenants were temporarily evacuated, and no other injuries were reported. 

The fire was quickly brought under control, with damage mostly to the back of the building, but the cause remains under investigation.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
