The NYPD’s 68th Precinct is boasting a double-digit reduction in crime under their commanding officer.
Capt. Robert Conwell has helmed the precinct for less than a year but since then crimes such as murder, robbery, burglary and grand larceny are down by 10 percent.
"We analyze crime as it comes in," Conwell says. "We don't wait a week, we don't even wait a day because sometimes that will be too late."
The 68th Precinct also started taking part in the neighborhood policing program in July. The initiative assigns neighborhood coordination officers to overlook the community.
Conwell says that almost 400 people from the community attended the first NCO rollout meeting and the precinct received emails and phone calls about it afterward.
Once NCOs were assigned, the precinct that covers Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton really started to see results.
"They do community outreach, they reach out to the residents, the business owners, they give their contact information," Conwell says.
The precinct is still working to solve two cold cases--a murder at Owl Head Park in 2016 and another at a karaoke club in 2018.
Conwell hopes to expand the work of NCOs to continue reducing crime in the area.
