The Bronx Gems dance and cheer team are a dance and cheer organization winning titles across the tri-state area.
They are the only nonprofit team to be nationally ranked in the Bronx. In addition to being a national winning cheer group, they have also won titles for dance and step.
Coach Marcy, founder and director of the organization, says the team is an important part of the Bronx community.
"What really separates us is that it’s not just about competitions and practices every Saturday. It’s about celebrating that April is Autism Awareness Month. We want to stay apart of the community,” she said. “It is a sisterhood. Every component that we have embodies sisterhood."
Dancers and cheerleaders with the Bronx Gems say the organization teaches them important lessons about friendship.
"We learn about sisterhood and what it takes to work as a team,” said one young team member.
The Bronx Gems are currently practicing out of the Sotomeyer Houses in Soundview. However, in less than a month they will have a new space in the South Bronx.
