A janitor accused of repeatedly raping an 8-year-old student at a Crown Heights school was arraigned Tuesday.
The judge set bail at $150,000 for 58-year-old Francis Evelyn, who worked at Public School 91, and issued a restraining order to keep Evelyn away from the girl. Evelyn, whose wife and daughter appeared in court to support him, is charged with first-degree rape, sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. Police arrested him Monday, saying he assaulted the girl on school property between February 1 and March 9. Authorities say the child told her mother, leading to police being called.
Parents with students attending P.S. 91 are upset over what they call a lack of information from administrators. Some are so concerned, they pulled their children out of school for the day.
The janitor of almost 20 years has no prior criminal record and is described as well-liked by a former student. He is due back in court March 23.
