Nearly 40 babies die each year in New York City from sleep-related accidents, many of which health experts say are preventable with proper practices.
In response, the city's Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) is offering free workshops to educate parents and caregivers on safe sleep habits.
The workshops focus on the "ABCs" of safe sleep: babies should sleep Alone, on their Backs and in a safety-approved Crib, bassinet or playpen.
ACS officials say these guidelines significantly reduce the risk of suffocation.
In addition to the ABCs, the sessions cover how to keep babies warm without the use of blankets, which can be hazardous. Parents are encouraged to use wearable sleep sacks and dress infants according to the room’s temperature.
The workshops also provide strategies to help caregivers manage sleep deprivation and high-stress moments, which can affect decision-making.
