Acting DA: 12 suspected gang members arrested
The borough's acting district attorney announced the arrests of a dozen alleged gang members Thursday suspected of multiple shootings.
Eric Gonzalez says it's the result of a long investigation into a string of shootings in and around Bushwick.
"This gang has been warring with rival gangs, and the result has been many shootings in the neighborhood," he says.
Some of the evidence included surveillance video of a woman sitting on a bus as a bullet flew through the window just inches from her head.
Many of the shootings happened in public places and broad daylight.
The 12 men face a slew of charges, the most serious of which could land them in prison for up to 25 years.
Gonzalez also used the crimes to highlight efforts to keep children away from gangs and guns.
"We have an after-school basketball program on Fridays in Red Hook," he said, noting one alternative. "We have a chess program in Bedford-Stuyvesant and East New York. And we're going to look for ways to continue to work with our young people to give them options outside of joining a gang."
