As an affordable housing complex for senior citizens opened Sunday in East New York, other senior citizens marched for similar housing.
Officials and residents gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Redwood Senior Living building at Wortman and Schenck avenues.
"We need to stand together for more of these buildings," said Redwood resident Olivia Wilkins. "I feel so blessed."
Hundreds of senior citizens marched through the streets of East New York to the building. They called on Mayor Bill de Blasio to expand similar developments and to upgrade New York City Housing Authority buildings.
No Redwood resident will pay more than 30 percent of his or her income.
