Hundreds of brand-new affordable housing units are officially open in Brownsville.

Representatives from Breaking Ground and the African American Planning Commission joined community leaders to officially cut the ribbon on Edwin's Plaza. The building is 115,000 square-feet and includes 3,000 feet of retail space along Livonia Avenue.

Of the 125 apartments, 88 will be set aside for those who have a history of homelessness. A local artist donated 125 pieces of art for formerly homeless residents who will be moving into their new homes. The African American Planning Commission will also provide on-site social services to all residents.

Officials say the building is full, but they have 152 units that will be opening in the South Bronx in September and 500 units that'll open in Dumbo in 2022.
