A new effort to protect animals is underway after lawmakers approved a measure in Dutchess County.

The county legislature has passed a plan to create an Animal Welfare Community Stewardship Committee.

Officials say the group will bring together veterinarians, animal welfare professionals, police and other local leaders.

The goal is to take action to prevent cruelty while also promoting public safety and overall community well-being.

Leaders say the committee will help coordinate responses and improve how animal-related issues are handled across the county.
