Artwork beautifies once-neglected pedestrian tunnel in Concourse

For years, Bronx activist Sidney Flores says a pedestrian tunnel on 174th Street was a neighborhood blight with graffiti filled walls, garbage thrown about and a lingering stench of urine. So she decided to take matters into her own hands.
With a new coat of paint and some creative ideas, Flores recruited artist King B to transform the once-dark pedestrian tunnel into a more colorful and more inviting walkway for Bronx residents.
Flores says once a week, he also uses a water hose to clean the sidewalk tunnel. New Yorkers who walk through the tunnel say the transformation has been eye-opening.
“Before – it was scary to walk through…now it's upbeat,” said one pedestrian.
Community advocates are working to get more lighting installed in the tunnel to help improve safety.
