Construction got underway Tuesday at the site of the future $4 billion Brooklyn Nets arena and 16 residential and commercial towers.
Demolition started early in the morning, with crews removing contaminants from a bus depot at Carlton Avenue and Pacific Street. Work will reportedly continue this week with the demolition of a Flatbush Avenue auto parts store. Insiders say a temporary Long Island Rail Road yard will be built next.
Members of the group Develop, Don't Destroy were on hand as heavy equipment rolled in. They're protesting Forest City Ratner Companies starting work while lawsuits are pending against the project. Critics argue the developer is trying to intimidate residents who are suing over eminent domain.
