The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation has opened an investigation into the fatal police shooting of a man with a knife in Brownsville.
An officer shot the 25-year-old man after he charged at police with a knife inside an apartment, the NYPD says.
It happened May 13 inside 108 Christopher Ave.
Police say a woman called 911 reporting that the father of her children had threatened to kill her. NYPD officials say the man was already inside when they entered.
He allegedly pulled a knife and advanced toward the officers. One officer fired a Taser, which police say was ineffective. A second officer then fired two rounds, striking the man in the chest.
News 12 spoke with residents, like Patricia Vann, who says people in the community are still processing it.
“To have children, it was around school time, to have children to come home from school seeing thousands of cops. Thank God it happened before they came out. Thank God. They were wondering what was going on, they shouldn’t have to see that," said Vann.
As of Thursday evening, the name of the man who died as well as the body camera footage haven't been released.
