Bronx and city public schools fail to accurately report violent incidents, according to a report released Wednesday by the city comptroller.

In an audit of several schools, Comptroller William Thompson Jr. found that nearly one-quarter of violent incidents went unreported. Thompson also found that some incidents were not accurately reported.The comptroller says inaccurate reporting of violent incidents makes it difficult for parents and educators to identify problems. State law requires all schools enter such incidents into an online database.

Thompson wants the Department of Education to better train school officials on how to categorize violent incidents. He also wants the DOE to have better oversight of schools.

DOE officials say while they agree with the comptroller's recommendations, they feel the report's language is misleading.
