Baker whose cakes appeared on 'SNL' opens storefront in Fort Greene

What started as a hobby for a popular social media business is now a storefront in Fort Greene.
Before Saint Street Bakery owner Morgan Knight had ovens, mixers, or even a business plan, all she had was a jar and a dream.
“After I took my first cake class, I made this to save up for the bakery I’d one day open. I think there’s like a toy and two quarters in here," Knight said.
She told News 12 that baking started as a hobby, she just made delicious treats for friends and family. Then, her work started to gain traction and her loved ones encouraged her to pursue her passion.
While still working as a paralegal, she started taking orders through social media, which quickly blew up.
“I was a nine-to-five traditionally, but really nine to about midnight some nights [as a] paralegal. And on the weekends I was making like 15 to 20 cakes a week," Knight said.
She then traded in her business attire for an apron and decided to start her social media business full-time.
“I just realized I had to take the jump and that I’d never feel fully ready," Knight said.
She began to receive celebrity recognition with her cakes that appeared on "Saturday Night Live" alongside Olivia Rodrigo.
Most recently, she decided to have the business in person. Her storefront on South Portland Avenue has been open for just a few weeks. She said one of the best parts about baking has been being able to build community.
“A big part of why I love cakes specifically is that it's meant to be shared. It's supposed to be shared. I've always felt like a big part of baking is communal in nature," Knight said. "I wanted it to be homey. I think a really big part of Saint Street has always been that it was literally just me pouring all of my love into something that someone's going to share and celebrate with their closest family friends. So I wanted it to feel like you're in someone's home."
