Bathgate-Fordham residents are outraged that another homeless shelter will be coming to their community.
They said their borough has the highest rate of homeless shelters in the city. Some of them said they have seen the borough carry the city's toughest times, like the AIDS epidemic, methanal clinics, services for ex-convicts and much more.
Council Member Oswald Feliz said the new building can be used for affordable housing for families who need it.
"This community board, if I'm correct, has about the second amount of highest shelters in the entire city and it's generally the same pattern -- poor minority communities are the ones who are getting the most and wealthy communities are in some cases seeing zero," Feliz said.
The Department of Homeless Services proposed for the new shelter to be built at 2248 Webster Ave., just steps away from an elementary school. The idea has outraged those who live in the neighborhood even more.
Residents said having various homeless shelters near schools is detrimental to their neighborhood.
Bronx Community 6 Board members wrote a letter to DHS as well as Mayor Eric Adams to convince them to rethink their decision to locate a new shelter in their community.
News 12 also reached out to DHS, which issued a statement that reads, "This safe haven site will have a very small footprint, offering 42 New Yorkers experiencing unsheltered homelessness a place to come inside, receive services and stabilize their lives. The site is in close proximity to parks and the St. Barnabas Hospital, places where we tend to see more individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness so this site will also help us address concerns of unsheltered homelessness in the community."
Residents, however, said enough is enough for their neighborhood.
