After a 200-year absence, Bronx Zoo staff members spotted a beaver back home in the Bronx River.
For the past few years, the river was a dumping ground for old cars and tires. Congressman Jose Serrano (D-Bronx) found the funds to clean it up and make life in the river possible again. John Calvelli of the Wildlife Conservation Society says the beaver?s return signifies a spiritual rebirth and the natural rebirth of the borough.
The beaver is significant to the area as it is on the New York City official seal and flag. It is also the official animal for the state of New York.
