Christmas Day was anything but a celebration for Bed-Stuy resident Morgan Frazier, whose Hancock Street apartment building was damaged in a fire, leaving her displaced and uncertain about her future.

Frazier was out of state visiting family when she received the call on Dec. 25.

“As soon as I got back, the reality set in,” she said.

The fire, which started in a vacant apartment above Frazier's unit, prompted the city to issue a vacate order for the building. The Red Cross has provided Frazier with temporary housing in a hotel, but she’s unsure what will happen next.

Frazier, an active member of her block association, said her community is supporting her during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $9,000 in just two days.

“It was an immediate response,” Frazier said. “So many phone calls, texts and donations.”

A cause of the fire had yet to be determined as of Tuesday.
