A Bronx native has made his way to the New York City Ballet, one of the best dance companies in the world.
Amar Ramasar was born in the South Bronx and says an uncle introduced him to ballet. He started taking classes when he was 13, considered a late age for beginning ballet. Ramasar says he wasn't too good at first, but the challenge to do better kept him going.
Ramasar quickly landed a spot with the New York City Ballet and is now one of its principal dancers.
"The list of what ballet has given me is just immense," says Ramasar. "I've been all over the world. I've been so blessed that way."
Ramasar says he plans on opening a dance studio or teaching classes in the Bronx when he retires.
