An air quality alert is in effect until 11 p.m. Please restrict strenuous outdoor activities especially if you suffer from respiratory issues.

Tonight, warm and humid weather continues across the New York City area as summer-like temperatures prevail. Tuesday and Wednesday will feel more like July, with highs pushing into the 90s in parts of the city and nearby suburbs. Some neighborhoods could come close to heat advisory levels by midweek.

Wednesday is shaping up to be the most active weather day of the week. A cold front moving through the area could trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day and evening. A few storms may bring strong wind gusts, brief downpours and dangerous lightning, especially during the afternoon commute.

By Thursday, a dramatic cooldown arrives across New York City and the surrounding region. Temperatures will drop nearly 20 degrees compared to Wednesday, with highs falling back into the 60s and low 70s. The cooler pattern is expected to continue into the holiday weekend, along with increasing chances for occasional showers.

If you plan to head to the beaches or waterways this week, use extra caution. Ocean and harbor water temperatures remain in the 50s, cold enough to quickly cause hypothermia if someone falls into the water. Boaters, kayakers and anyone spending time near the water should stay alert and prepared.
