A church in Brooklyn is collecting money for Haiti in anticipation of possible damages caused by Hurricane Matthew.

The Category 4 hurricane is roaring across the Caribbean Sea and is expected to make landfall in Haiti and Jamaica on Monday. Hurricane warnings have been issued for those nations, as well as Cuba, and the storm is expected to pass over part of the Bahamas as well.

Haitians living in Brooklyn tell News 12 they are concerned for the safety of their loved ones back at home. The Haitian government has opened more than 1,300 emergency shelters for its residents.

Parishioners at St. Teresa of Avila in Crown Heights collected money Sunday to send to charities in Haiti to help with recovery work after the storm.

The National Hurricane Center is predicting the storm will bring strong winds, along with life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides. There is the chance for up to 40 inches of rain in some isolated areas, the center says.

The church will be holding special prayer sessions for Haiti later this week.
