Brooklyn residents and officials are protesting plans to build more than 1,000 parking spaces at the Atlantic Yards, the future site of the new Nets arena.
The spaces are supposed to be temporary, but in this case that could mean 15-20 years. Developer Forest City Ratner says the plan could work and only two city streets would have to be given up. But residents opposed to the plan say the parking lot would inhibit traffic in all directions around the Park Slope and Fort Greene areas.
Residents are taking their message to the state, asking Governor Spitzer (D-NY) to step in and revoke the sale.
Once the first phase of the project is complete, Forest City Ratner says the lots will be developed.
