Blood banks across the country recognize January as National Blood Donor Month, which comes at a time when donations tend to decline and demand rises.
Last year, the New York Blood Center declared five blood emergencies, something they say hasn’t happened in recent history. While supply is currently stable and there is no ongoing shortage, they say it is still crucial to receive more donations to help save lives.
The New York Blood Center says people are less likely to donate during the winter months because of the colder weather. They’re dedicating January to giving people that extra push, as the rise of illnesses like the flu and RSV are raising concerns over maintaining proper donation levels.
