Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 2013 budget has proposed to cut $27 million from Brooklyn's public libraries.

Services available to the community would be cut, like the language and computer classes available at the Main Branch at Grand Army Plaza, if the budget goes through. With the proposed cuts, library hours would have to be cut in half, 16 neighborhood branches would have to close, and 16 percent of the full time staff would be laid off. They would also have 27 percent fewer books available to the community.

Advocates have started an online petition at the library's website urging the city not to approve the cuts.
