More than 200 bodies were raised from the crypt at the Bay Ridge Methodist Church Thursday while neighbors and church leaders were at odds over the future of the church. Many of the exhumed bodies belong to the original founders of the neighborhood. While members of the community have been unsuccessfully fighting the demolition of the church for more than a year, church leaders are happy about the demolition. ?We?re here to serve Christ. We?re not here to preserve buildings and that?s what people need to understand? said pastor Robert Emerick. Protestors are hoping that an alternative buyer will purchase the lot to save the historic church and burial grounds.Representatives of Bay Ridge Methodist Church, also known as the Green Church, say that maintenance costs were getting too high to preserve the old building. They plan to devote future church funding to Christian missions instead. Church leaders plan to build a new eco-friendly church nearby.
