Residents at a Brooklyn apartment complex say an elevator that has been broken for over a month is forcing tenants to cross the roof to an adjacent section of the building to gain access to its working elevator. 

Residents at 80 Clarkson Ave. say they have filed dozens of complaints with 311 about the broken elevator inside their building, but nothing has been done. 

Tenants Association president Janice Thomas says tenants, including some with disabilities, are forced to climb six flights of stairs. Once on the sixth floor, she says residents cross the roof to the adjacent section of the complex to use the working elevator, finally climbing down one flight of stairs to reach their apartments.

Thomas says this is not the first time this has happened. Twenty complaints have been filed with the owner of the building about the broken elevator since 2015. Currently, the elevator has two pending violations. 

However, she says the owners of the building, First Ocean Realty, told her they are waiting on a replacement part to fix the elevator this weekend. 

She says the building houses many disabled residents and climbing six flights of stairs is just too much.
