Elected officials in the Bronx announced plans to introduce resolutions at the federal and city levels to officially name June 1 “Black Wall Street Day.”
The name is intended to honor victims of the Tulsa race massacre 100 years after the deadly event.
On May 31 and June 1 of 1921, white rioters looted and burned Tulsa’s Greenwood district, which was known as “Black Wall Street.” The massacre left hundreds of Black residents dead and thousands homeless.
Rep. Ritchie Torres, City Councilmember Vanessa Gibson and Bronx District Attorney Darcell Clark held a press conference in Concourse Village calling for the name change.
Advocates say it’s important to educate people on the truth of what really happened in Tulsa.
“If this would have happened in any other community, the response would have been different,” Gibson says. “You wouldn’t hear the lies that were told in this community, as if they did nothing wrong.”
President Joe Biden is also giving a speech in Tulsa today to honor the victims and announce steps his administration plans to take to reduce the racial wealth gap.
