Bronx health organizers and community leaders rallied Monday for diabetes prevention and awareness during World Diabetes Day.
Members of the group 'Health People' gathered on Southern Boulevard at their Longwood outreach facility.
The organization offers educational assistance to diabetics struggling with the disease, as well as teaching those at risk how to prevent themselves from getting the disease.
Organizers say they are calling on the state to fund more diabetes prevention programs.
Director Chris Norwood says the state shells out millions of dollars on diabetics but does not invest in low-cost preventative and maintenance programs.
According to the group, over 5 million New Yorkers are pre-diabetic.
