The Bronx mother of a 16-year-old honor student who was killed by a stray bullet in April 2022 started a foundation to provide a safe place for local kids.

Yanely Henriquez says there's not a day that goes by she doesn't think of her beloved angel, Angellyh Yambo. Her home has a collage of photos of all her memories they shared since she was little.

Yambo was struck and killed by a stray bullet on April 8, 2022 while she walked home from school. The alleged shooter, a teenager himself, has since been charged with Yambo's murder.

On Tuesday, family and friends released heart-shaped pink and white balloons at the teen's gravesite in honor of what would have been her 17th birthday.

"On the 24th of this month was her birthday, that was very painful," Henriquez says.

As painful as its been coping with the loss of her only daughter, Henriquez says she is turning her pain into purpose by creating a foundation that will provide a safe haven for local kids and teens.

"The slogan is, 'every kid is Angellyh because every kid has a dream,'" she says.

Henriquez says Yambo had big dreams and that she often reminded her that she was destined for big things.

Henriquez says her daughter's foundation is a symbol of that achievement, by providing a safe space for young people to gather and be supported.

"That's what we want, to create a place where kids can go and feel safe," Henriquez says.

Henriquez says her daughter is guiding through the process.

"She is telling us where to go, what she wants, how she wants. I feel her everyday, talk to her and tell her, 'thank you' and I ask her to guide me and give me strength to continue," she says.

The family plans to hold a second birthday celebration on Saturday for family and friends that were not able to attend the initial celebration.
