Dozens of Bronx residents made their voices heard outside Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie's office Monday morning - calling to approve new legislation that, they say, will save lives.
Sammy's Law would allow New York City to set its own speed limits. The legislation was presented to lawmakers after 12-year-old Sammy Cohen's death back in 2013. He was struck and killed by a driver just a few blocks away from his home in Brooklyn.
With a letter in hand, parents and members of Families for Safer Streets are demanding a vote by state lawmakers after Sammy's Law was brought to a halt in Albany.
Speaker Heastie's office responded to the outcry in a statement released to News 12, "At this time we are still discussing this with our NYC members."
