A street in the Bronx was co-named after an NYPD officer who died of a 9/11-releated illness.

Officer Patrick McGovern was a 19-year veteran of the NYPD who died from cancer in 2019. He developed the illness following his rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero in downtown Manhattan.

Councilmember Mark Gjonaj joined officers outside of the 49th Precinct to celebrate the co-naming of the street where McGovern once worked.

McGovern Avenue rests at the intersection of Eastchester Road and Rhinelander Avenue.

Speakers at the ceremony said the purpose of the street naming was not only to honor McGovern, but to teach younger generations about the brave and proud officer he was.
